Our Work

Envisioning
Sustainable Future

Our Work

All human rights issues have sustainable development dimensions. RASIT’s overall objective is to promote the sciences and strengthen its influence on society’s sustainable development programs.
As a focal center for debate about science, society and global policy RASIT champions the contribution that science and innovation can make to economic prosperity, quality of life and environmental sustainability.
Several of the issues RASIT works on are driven by organization / country demand and regional priorities. However, many of the issues RASIT tackles are global in nature and require international collaboration with other science academies / institutions, research and policy organizations, civil society and private sectors.

RASIT’s work is now organized around four themes: sustainability, innovation, diplomacy, and advocacy.

Sustainability

Climate change, poverty, energy and food security, biodiversity and population change is shaping the 21st century. These issues will alter how humans live, the balance of risks that they face, and the ways that people govern a more interdependent world. Tackling these challenges will require the best available science: to measure and predict impacts to identify solutions and to evaluate options and pathways for adaptation.

Innovation

We cannot predict the 21st century counterparts to quantum theory, nor where the great innovators of the future will get their formative training and inspiration. But one thing seems certain: unless we get smarter, we’ll get poorer. Our relative standing will sink unless some of the best ideas of the 21st century germinate and are exploited. The pressures of an economic downturn, the pace of globalization and the urgency of moving to a low-carbon economy, require policy makers to rethink established links between the creation of knowledge and long-term prosperity.

Diplomacy

Many aspects of foreign policy have scientific components. Science can act as a source of 'soft power' by improving a country’s influence on the international stage. And the networks of cooperation that underpin science are ideally placed to broker solutions to global problems.

Advocacy

RASIT works at the nexus of STEAM and Socio-Economic Sustainable Development to provide high quality policy solutions and recommendations to broadening participation of scientists across all disciplines by maintaining visibility of science issues in policy and development international forums and promote consensus on evidence-based policy development and implementation (including strategic priorities and alignment of resources).

RASIT plays a global role in facilitating joint action on many fronts, mainly progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and through support for a Global Strategy and Policy for Science at the United Nations and its entities.

RASIT seeks to achieve and maintain the highest possible political commitment to the development of science in the 2030 Development Agenda and beyond by:
Developing and facilitating member-based advocacy work, linking action to key policy moments to ensure science issues is a global and regional priority in the sustainable development framework
Engaging media, parliamentarians and civil society to create sustained interest and accountability around science issues
Working to develop important resolutions to prioritize policy and budget action to improve the status of science and innovation through collaboration with the International organizations and
Partnerships with the private sector, which will strengthen partner engagement and alignment nationally, regionally and globally by: Developing relevant messaging for our development partners and facilitating participation of private sector in science and innovation development issues and Encouraging stronger coordination within our multi-stakeholder partner platform and advocacy network.

Work Plan: 2020 - 2025

The work plan has been developed in the context of RASIT’s Mission and Priorities. It also builds on the developments that have taken place in national, regional and global efforts for sustainable development issues, as well as lessons learned from the implementation of previous work plans.

Building on RASIT's achievements, the 2020-2025 work plan is structured around Socio-Economic Sustainable Development, which will enable RASIT to make significant contribution to achieving its Mission, as set out below:

Outcome 1: Equality in Science, Technology and Innovation.

Outcome 2: Strengthen the capacity of developing countries in Science and Technology.

Outcome 3: Energy, Water and Food Nexus for Sustainable Development.

Outcome 4: Science Diplomacy for Peace and Development.

Outcome 5: Increase Investment in Science and Innovation.

Special Projects:

  • “Value Veda” for Science Teachers
  • Girls in Science 4 SDGs International Platform
  • The Capital for Women and Girls in Science

Across the agreed outcomes and projects, the work plan is structured around delivering five priority areas of focus in 2020-2025, including:

  1. Science Policy and Action Plan for achieving Equality in Science.
  2. Culture and Arts as the 4th pillar of sustainable development.
  3. The fundamental role media sectors and actors in achieving the SDGs.
  4. Empower Disabled individuals both as agents and beneficiaries of Sustainable Development Program.
  5. Strengthen Private Sector engagement and alignment nationally, regionally, globally.

The implementation of the Work plan will be coordinated and facilitated by the Executive Board and the Councilors Board. The Councilors are appointed based on criteria agreed by the Executive Board, such as technical expertise, strength of networks and ability to dedicate time towards these tasks.

Since 1968, RASIT has been an organization with an infinite vision into the future and will continue this tradition of measureless services for the benefit of mankind.
