EDUCATION FOR ALL

Education is a basic human right

A child’s right to education entails the right to learn. Yet, for too many children across the globe, schooling does not lead to learning. Over 600 million children worldwide are unable to attain minimum proficiency levels in reading and mathematics, even though two thirds of them are in school. For out-of-school children, foundational skills in literacy and numeracy are further from grasp.

Around the world, children are deprived of education and learning for various reasons. Poverty remains one of the most obstinate barriers. Children living through economic fragility, political instability, conflict or natural disaster are more likely to be cut off from schooling – as are those with disabilities, or from ethnic minorities. In some countries, education opportunities for girls remain severely limited.

Without quality education, children face considerable barriers to employment and earning potential later in life. They are more likely to suffer adverse health outcomes and less likely to participate in decisions that affect them – threatening their ability to shape a better future for themselves and their societies.

Since 2009, El-Sharifa Fatima Fund continues its efforts to help underprivileged Children in Iraq, Refugees and deserving communities in African States. The Fund’s mission is to break the cycle of poverty by helping children from impoverished or marginalized communities access education for a better life.

The Fund's Action can be summarized as following:

50K

Children received School Bags. Every school bag contains all the required materials and books to support children for five academic years.

2,387

Children received School Fees and Uniforms for the Elementary School years.

295

Schools received Internet Connections, Computers, Printers, and Printers' supplies.

16

Schools Libraries established and equipped with educational materials.

MY PAINTING INITIATIVE

“Between the uncertainty in the hearts and minds of our children for their inability to absorb what is happening in their country, children live under the weight of violence, terrorism, poverty, displacement and lack of care and education and lack of services and other risks and neglect that left physical and psychological consequences on children for years and years... My Painting Initiative aims to bring hope, confidence and optimism to children through the power of arts”.

HRH Princess Dr. Nisreen El-Hashemite
RASIT's Executive Director

MY PAINTING

providing new hope to children through the power of Arts

Communication and expression are the ways children share their responses to what they see, hear and experience. Creative expression supports children’s emotional wellbeing and reduces anxiety. It’s how children represent themselves, their thoughts, and feelings as they develop their ideas.

“My Painting” initiative is an arts-based approach to providing psychosocial support for children around the world. The initiative uses expressive arts to help children, especially those less fortunate and from underprivileged communities, – in schools, child-friendly spaces, centers, and at home – process and communicate feelings, experiences, or ideas in an emotionally supportive environment where they can connect with peers and caring adult facilitators.

El-Sharifa Fatima Fund is working to support the social and emotional well-being of vulnerable children in Iraq and around the world. Children age between 5 - 12, along with parents and caregivers, are supported through drawing, painting, and many other art forms, children create, express, support, and learn!

“My Painting” has a strong evidence base, on the impact of the arts on stress reduction, well-being, learning, and development, as well as from recent evaluations of the program in different settings around the world.

Since 2009, El-Sharifa Fatima Fund has supported more than 45 thousand children in 23 countries across the globe with arts supplies and teaching materials and methods. The Fund organized 11 art exhibitions for children to exhibit their work.

CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES

NO ONE IS LEFT BEHIND!

At least one billion of the world’s population have some form of disability, whether present at birth or acquired later in life. Nearly 240 million of them are children. Children with disabilities are a highly diverse group with wide-ranging life experiences. They live in every community, and are born with or acquire distinct impairments that, in relation to their surroundings, lead to functional difficulties – like seeing, walking, communicating, caring for oneself or making friends.

Unfortunately, children with disabilities are among the most marginalized people in every society. A range of barriers limits their ability to function in daily life, access social services (like education and health care) and engage in their communities. Each of these is rooted in stigma and discrimination that reflect negative perceptions of disability associated with ableism: a system of beliefs, norms and practices that devalues people with disabilities.

Despite international commitments, children with disabilities remain largely invisible in programs meant to build more equitable, inclusive societies. This invisibility is both a cause and a consequence of their exclusion. Children with disabilities often work hard to accommodate themselves to an inaccessible world that excludes them.

El-Sharifa Fatima Fund is committed to inclusive communities and continues its support to children with disabilities.

Since 2010, The Fund has provided:

  • 42 Wheelchairs,
  • sign language interpretation in 11 healthcare clinics,
  • 92 sports activities,
  • fulfilled the dreams of 27 disabled children,
  • 76 computers and special softwares for blind children, and
  • 55 scholarships from Elementary to Secondary School.

CHILDREN'S DAY

Making dreams come true!

El-Sharifa Fatima El-Hashemite believes that every child has the right to dream, no matter who they are or where they live.

Through Children’s Day initiative, the Fund is passionate about delivering moments of magic and having a lasting impact on children who might not even consider having a dream come true.

No One is left behind! To ensure inclusion of every child, we give priority to children who live in underprivileged and unfortunate communities, including children with a disability, serious illness, or life-limiting conditions.

No matter the dream, whether meeting a Princess or a celebrity, watching a sport game, attending a concert, travel, makeover, or getting a tablet and sometimes a bicycle, our team of dream makers, work closely with our dreamers to deliver a unique experience, that will provide moments of joy and happiness and have a long-lasting impact.

The Fund has been supporting fulfilled the dreams of over 3,500 children, of which 511 children with serious and life-limiting conditions.

CHILDREN'S SPORTS DAY

healthy body is healthy mind

Sports, whether team-based or individual, have lots of positive impacts on children. Children's participation in sports aids physical and social development, contribute to academic success, and help nurture a child’s self-esteem.

Due to the massive invasion of the cyberworld, Families have fallen apart, parents have lost their roles, and children have grown. rogue and lost their sense of reality.

At The Fund, wellness and living healthy are about the spirit, mind, and body at all levels of life. It's about feeling complete. It's about longing for self-improvement and helping others. It's about leading the life we have. To accomplish such a goal, we saw the need to reconnect children and their families by engaging them in interactive fun programs, out of the house and away from the cyber world.

El-Sharifa Fatima Fund organizes, or co-sponsors Sports Day and various programs related to the healthy living of children and rebuilding and strengthening family ties. After all, healthy body is healthy mind.

The games played at sports day can go beyond traditional events such as running, football, and basketball, and include entertaining games such as the egg and spoon race and sack race – there is something for everyone!

The Sports Day initiative has many benefits for children. In addition to the physical benefits, playing sports can help children develop their social skills and set them up for positive relationship building for life. Through sports day, children get the chance to show leadership, teamwork, and communication skills as they interact with new people and face new challenges. Furthermore, the encouragement received during the Sports Day from coaches, classmates, teachers, and parents has a positive impact on a child’s self-esteem and overall confidence levels.

In USA for example, The Fund co-sponsors Youth Athletic Leagues, where teams of young athletes as young as 5 years old are encouraged to join teams of their favorite sports, receive a weekly organized training, and compete on a national level. In other countries – mainly in developing and underdeveloped countries, The Fund also co-sponsors School Sports Day.

The Fund has supported 307 Sports Days in total, 92 events were especially designed for children with disabilities.

WATER IS LIFE

Growing up in a clean and safe environment is every child’s right. Access to clean water, basic toilets, and good hygiene practices not only keeps children thriving, but also gives them a healthier start in life.

The consequences of unsafe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) on children can be deadly. Over 700 children under age 5 die every day of diarrheal diseases due to lack of appropriate WASH services. In areas of refugee camps and conflict areas, children are nearly 20 times more likely to die from diarrheal disease than from the conflict itself.

Through Cansu Global program of RASIT, The Fund provided atmospheric water generator machines that produce high quality drinking water based on World Health Organization standards.

The Fund installed machines at schools located and provided machines to families who could not afford clean, safe drinking water, this is either because of the distance of the highly crowded water dispensers, or the financial cost. In Schools, students, teachers, workers, and others are benefiting from the clean drinking water.

Since its installation in 2018, and per the comments of teachers and parents, the number of water-borne diseases such as diarrhea has been reduced dramatically to almost zero. Furthermore, it helped parents save the high cost of bottled clean water for children and the case is the same for workers and teachers. In their own words, the supported families have reported that they have not developed any diseases due to polluted water and saved the cost of visits to medical clinics and Medication. In addition, the violence and stress within families has reduced dramatically, and the costs of bottled clean water have been saved, and are spent on children’s education, food, and other life essentials.

The Fund provided 83 atmospheric water generator machines in India and West African countries.

HEALTH & SOCIAL-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Millions of women and children are still dying from causes that can be prevented with quality health care and strong health systems. Communicable and non-communicable diseases, mental health conditions, injuries, malnutrition, environmental hazards: All pose threats to children worldwide. Still, within and among countries, stark inequities persist when it comes to accessing live-saving care.

Women and children living in poverty, with a disability, or in an emergency setting are especially likely to be cut off from services they need to survive and thrive. And the risk of disease and malnutrition soars during conflict, natural disaster, and other crises.

While quick and easy access to healthcare services is a reality for some, women and children living in poverty, with a disability, or in an emergency setting are especially likely to be cut off from services they need to survive and thrive. The risk of disease and malnutrition increases during conflict, natural disaster, and other crises.

El-Sharifa Fatima Fund offers hope to those who effectively have been shut out of the healthcare services due to poverty. Furthermore, The Fund continues its commitments towards women’s economic empowerment by providing them with the resources and training to enhance their income opportunities to secure their livelihoods.

Since 2008, The Fund continues its humanitarian efforts to provide healthcare and counselling services for underprivileged women and children in Iraq, Refugees and deserving communities in African States.

The Fund has supported 311 women from deserving & underprivileged communities to start small businesses. It further provided 20 Healthcare clinics in Western African countries with medical equipment, 45 E-Health services, and 31 Tons of medications.

The Story

Wonders of Coffee Arts Collection

Until 2003

  • The Wonders of Coffee art collection was very personal to HRH Dr Princess Nisreen El-Hashemite. The Wonders of Coffee is a collection of coffee paintings created by The Princess.
  • In September 2003, The Princess received a phone call from a renowned physician in Iraq asking her to financially support underprivileged families in Baghdad. The Princess, who was an employee of Harvard Medical School at that time, did not have the enough fund to do so as her salary was hardly enough to support her living in Boston.
  • The Princess’s mother, Her Royal Highness El-Sharifa Fatima El-Hashemite, suggested selling the coffee paintings and generating fund to help her people of Iraq.

Since 2003:

  • the first art exhibition for the Princess was held in Boston (MA-USA), in December another art exhibition in New York City, and then exhibitions followed.
  • All proceedings of the Princess’s Coffee paintings were directed to support underprivileged people in Iraq and to whomever is in need around the world.

2006

  • As humanitarian situation in Iraq got worse, affecting more women, children, and young people. The Princess decided to direct proceedings of her art collection into educational and health programs in Iraq.
  • El-Sharifa Fatima Fund was launched as a program of RASIT.
  • The fund named after Her Highness El-Sharifa Fatima El-Hashemite, to honor her as the idea initiator.
